Physical segmentation

Physical segmentation was dominant before the cloud era. Dividing the network into distinct physical segments using hardware devices such as firewalls and routers is the primary idea behind this approach.

Each section is equipped with its own firewall, which serves as a guard regulating the flow of incoming and outgoing data.

Logical segmentation

Logical segmentation creates virtual sub-networks within the physical network infrastructure using software-based methods. This approach is more economical and adaptable than physical segmentation and is often implemented using VLANs.

Virtual local area networks (VLANs):

VLANs employ Layer 2 switching to categorize devices logically, irrespective of where they are physically situated on the network.
